Helen O'Leary at The Catherine Hammond Gallery

Here is the artist Helen O'Leary at the opening of her exhibit at the Catherine Hammond Gallery, Glengariff, Co Cork. The show runs till mid August and is a pure delight, focusing on the informal marks that are often ignored around and beneath everyday objects and on work surfaces. The palette is light and transparent with little use of white. See some of the work at www.hammondgallery.com . Helen teachs fine art at Penn State University and lives in Co Louth outside working semesters with husband Paul Chidester, an accomplishes painter himself. See their perceptive book of photos of Ireland's signage, frontage and informal roadsigns: 'New Potatoes'.

Here is the official gen:

Helen O’Leary: The Cost of Things That Matter
An exhibition of paintings that explore how order forms from chaos opened July 29th and runs through August 16, 2006. In her work, O’Leary explores the technical assumptions of what makes a painting and questions whether painting is a process or a product.

Born in Co. Wexford, O’Leary was educated at the Art Institute of Chicago. She now teaches at Pennsylvania State University and spends part of each year in Co. Leitrim. She has shown extensively in New York and Chicago, and at the Kerlin and Hallward galleries in Dublin.

Mc Bride Opening July 2006

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

Mc Bride Gallery opens in Killarney, June 2006

Georgina Goulding and Mary Mc Bride

The new Mc Bride Gallery was opened by John O'Donaghue, minister for Sports and Art ( a great Irish mixture). The gallery on New Street is on two levels and beautifully neutral in colour and fittings. There is a fine new wooden floor on ground level and the lighting is perfect throughout. The show was crammed to the gunnels with guests and it was deemed a huge success.
